I think this:
1 Check the current driver and firmware version using the vSphere Client
2 Download the lates driver and firmware from the hardware vendor's website
3 Plan for Maintenance window to perform the update
4 Apply the firmware update to the host
5 Update the driver using vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM)
6 Reboot the host to complete the update process
7 Verify tha the new driver and firmware versions are active
I think that when you set the plan maintenance window, it is done before downloading, so I think this would be the correct option:
1 Check the current driver and firmware version using the vSphere Client
2 Plan for Maintenance window to perform the update
3 Download the lates driver and firmware from the hardware vendor's website
4 Apply the firmware update to the host
5 Update the driver using vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM)
6 Reboot the host to complete the update process
7 Verify tha the new driver and firmware versions are active
I agree with you, because there isn't a better place for the 'plan for a maintenance window' but it feels arbitrary. If the item was 'start your maintenance window' it would make more sense. As it is, it's like you are asserting that downloading the driver needs to happen before you 'plan'. This seems like there should be a list in a KB or a Doc somewhere that you were supposed to have read. I haven't found one so far.
Agreed with your point of view, but I think you first check current driver and firmware, then go to vendor website to check which is the latest version, download them if there is a new one, then you say "ok, I need to apply this", then you plan a maintenance window. So I'm with diegof1.
