Exam VMCE 2021 topic 1 question 9 discussion

Actual exam question from Veeam's VMCE 2021
Question #: 9
Topic #: 1
[All VMCE 2021 Questions]

15 VMs are running on a Hyper-V platform and five physical servers at a remote office (ROBO). The administrator has been tasked with setting up centralized off-site backups at the headquarters (HQ). The available bandwidth is 50 Mbps. RPO is set to six hours and the data generated for the interval is 500 GB. WAN accelerators can be added if necessary. Which of the following will achieve the RPO?

  • A. Use backup copy jobs in with High-Performance Mode enabled. Set the schedule to run every six hours.
  • B. Use backup copy jobs with copy mode set to "immediate copy". Use WAN acceleration.
  • C. Use backup copy jobs with copy mode set to "periodic copy" and copy every six hours.
  • D. Configure the backup copy jobs with traffic throttling to 30 Mbps to limit the impact. Enable WAN acceleration.

Question incomplete, doesn't specify requisite RPO. C just straight up immediate copy mode

It's weird how so many supposedly "Correct answers" appear to be wrong in the end. I've only done 10 questions and already a lot.

Selected Answer: B
According to the Veeam Backup & Replication user guide12, WAN acceleration is a technology that optimizes data transfer to remote locations by performing deduplication and caching. It is specific for off-site backup copy jobs and replication jobs12. Therefore, if you want to achieve the RPO of six hours with 500 GB of data and 50 Mbps of bandwidth, you should use backup copy jobs with WAN acceleration enabled. This will reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred over the network and speed up the backup process12. The simplest configuration would be an immediate copy mode with WAN acceleration

The answer is C. It is said, the WAN accelerator can be added if necessary. the answer doesn't have to have a WAN accelerator added. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/backup_copy_schedule.html?ver=120

what if the backups are configured to run every 8 hours ? does immediate copy still work? If it is stated that wan accelerators can be added, I think it is redundant to consider them in the answer. I think this time should be C

I check and vCat is correct: There are no traffic throtteling settings in a backup copy-job. So D is out and the answer should be B

The answer is D. Explanation: Configuring backup copy jobs with traffic throttling to 30 Mbps ensures that the backup traffic doesn't exceed the available bandwidth of 50 Mbps. This helps to prevent network congestion and ensures the backups can be completed within the RPO timeframe. Enabling WAN acceleration allows Veeam to optimize data transfer between the remote office and the headquarters by deduplicating and compressing data. This can significantly reduce the amount of data transferred over the network, making efficient use of the available bandwidth. By using both traffic throttling and WAN acceleration together, you can achieve the desired RPO of six hours while minimizing the impact on the network and effectively utilizing the available bandwidth. Using backup copy jobs with traffic throttling and enabling WAN acceleration will help ensure that the off-site backups can be performed within the required RPO while efficiently utilizing the available bandwidth for data transfer.

Using the good old way of eliminating false answers to get to the correct one: 1. To get the amount of data through WAN you need WAN acceleration. Just put the numbers in: http://rps.dewin.me/bandwidth/ So answers A and C are out as they do not use WAN acceleration. 2. There are no traffic throtteling settings in a backup copy-job. These settings are proxy and repostory related and need to be set there. Even there is no indication that it is necessary to care about impact on other traffic. So D is out 3. Conclusion: only one answer is left->B.

answer B because for copy 500GB in 6 hours you need al least 176 Mb/s but using WAN Accelerators you could archive this with 50 Mb...

Selected Answer: A
Based on the given requirements, the best answer is option A, which suggests using backup copy jobs with High-Performance Mode enabled and scheduling the backup copy job to run every six hours. This option ensures that the RPO of six hours is achieved and is the most efficient use of the available bandwidth.

C is the correct answer, I believe. When asking about RPO of 6 hours, it is the only option that will actually run every 6 hours. While the bandwidth information matters in the real world, I think it is a red herring when on a test question, especially when none of the other options work.

Option D is the best option since it limits the impact on other network traffic by throttling the traffic to 30 Mbps and enables WAN acceleration to optimize the backup data transfer. This option is more likely to achieve the RPO of six hours without impacting other network traffic. Therefore, the correct option is D.

But the question is asking Which of the following will achieve the RPO? Not which option will least impact other networks. At best 30mbits per second will only be able to copy 80GB in 6 hours. With WAN accelerators a big chunk more, but definitely not 500GB. I'd go with 50mbps. They using megabits not megabytes. Mb vs MB
