The followTail attribute in inputs.conf is used to specify how Splunk handles pre-existing content in a monitored file:
When followTail = true, Splunk only ingests new data added to the file after monitoring begins. This prevents older content already in the file from being indexed.
By default, followTail is false, meaning Splunk will read and index the entire file, including pre-existing content, from the start.
