Exam PSM II topic 1 question 80 discussion

Actual exam question from Scrum's PSM II
Question #: 80
Topic #: 1
[All PSM II Questions]

The director of engineering in your organization always stresses the importance of meeting deadlines in order for the engineering department to be seen as a reliable source for the product management department. The director has calculated that the team's velocity needs to increase an additional 15% to meet the commitment he made to management for the release date of the product.
He asks Steven, the team's Scrum Master, to increase his team's velocity. Which would be the best two responses for Steven to take? (Choose two.)

  • A. He explains how a team uses the velocity of a Sprint primarily to forecast work for the next Sprint, not to perfectly predict future productivity. He refers the director to the Product Owner for all information concerning the progress of development.
  • B. He informs the director of organizational impediments he is aware of that prevent the team from being more productive. He suggests collaborating with him on how to remove these impediments.
  • C. He educates his director how it is part of a team's self-organization to improve velocity. He invites the director to the next Sprint Retrospective to brainstorm on how they can improve.
  • D. He helps the director understand that it typically takes a few Sprints for a team to gradually increase the velocity up to the level expected. Meanwhile he presents this to the team as a challenge and a company goal, leaving it however up to them to figure out exactly how to achieve this.
  • E. He tells the director that this is not his responsibility in Scrum. He tells the director to work with the Product Owner to check whether the estimates on the Product Backlog are being respected during implementation.

A because SM should coach stakeholders on the values and meaning of Scrum. E because it's similar to A but separating the role of the Managing Director out from the Scrum. I honestly think B is not the right answer because there is no "impediment" mentioned anywhere in the question. It's like "If you have an orange and your friend gave you an apple, what is the colour of the sky? - answer is 2 because aliens do not wear hat"

Stakeholders should not be attending Sprint Retro because these meetings are intended to be a safe space for the Development Team to discuss internal processes and improvements without external pressure.

B. By addressing organizational impediments, Steven is taking a proactive approach to identify and eliminate obstacles that hinder the team's productivity. Collaborating with the director to remove these impediments can lead to tangible improvements in the team's velocity. C. Highlighting the concept of self-organization and inviting the director to the Sprint Retrospective aligns with the Scrum framework's principles. This allows the team to reflect on their performance, identify areas for improvement, and collaboratively find solutions. Involving the director in this process fosters a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork.

D can't be true as velocity is a measure for predictability not a measure for success. value is the measure for success.

The answer D does not talk about "velocity" being a measure of success, it only talks about the team increasing velocity. I believe the answer is A and D.

D is correct. B is true for specific situation: there are impediments, and those are which the director can be a help of. Sometimes the team needs just to speed up at the beginning and this is not necessarily an impediment.

D is incorrect because neither the Scrum Master (nor the PO) can force the dev team to speed up. Speed is calculated by the dev team, and the sprint goal represents the commitment. Thus there's no commitment for hard deadlines or having items done during the sprint. Speed is not the first measure to success, but "done" product increment.

A and B are correct, but don't know why D is incorrect

D is not correct because there is no "expected level" of velocity. Velocity should be determined and unique to the Development Team
