A. The keyword here is that the field is an optional lookup. Roll-up summaries are good for master detail, which in this case would not be the case. Therefore an apex trigger would be the best option.

Ullr is right, as parent record is optional, but Roll-up summary fields are only available for objects in a Master-Detail relationship.
