During a project's execution phase, two team members are having conflicts with other team members within the team on technical and interpersonal levels.
Which two actions should the project manager take first to address this conflict? (Choose two.)
A.
Plan to resolve the team members' conflicts after the sprint and focus on achieving the goal.
B.
Arrange individual meetings with the team members who cannot work together effectively.
C.
Address the conflict during team meetings for the entire team to participate and find solutions.
D.
Ask human resources (HR) to intervene before it escalates and affects the team's performance.
E.
Discuss the conflict early among the affected team members using a direct, collaborative approach.
B. Arrange individual meetings with the team members who cannot work together effectively.
C. Address the conflict during team meetings for the entire team to participate and find solutions.
Individual meetings with the conflicting team members allow the project manager to understand their perspectives, concerns, and underlying issues. This information is crucial for devising effective strategies to address the conflict. Additionally, addressing the conflict during team meetings provides an opportunity for open communication and collaboration among the entire team, fostering a collective effort to find solutions and improve team dynamics. Combining individual discussions with broader team involvement helps create a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to conflict resolution.
B is for conflict at interpersonal levels.
C is for conflict at technical levels.
E can't be option due to term 'early' and this option is not better than B. This option is not to resolve conflict at technical level.
B. Arrange individual meetings with the team members who cannot work together effectively
E. Discuss the conflict early among the affected team members using a direct, collaborative approach
Individual meetings with the team members involved in the conflict can provide a safe and private environment to understand the root causes of the conflict, gather perspectives, and explore potential solutions. This approach allows the project manager to gain insights into the specific issues and concerns of each team member.
Discussing the conflict early among the affected team members using a direct, collaborative approach promotes open communication and encourages the team members to work together to find resolutions. Encouraging open dialogue can lead to a more constructive and respectful environment for addressing conflicts.
Options A, C, and D might be considered later in the conflict resolution process, but the initial steps should focus on addressing the issues directly with the involved team members to foster a more productive and harmonious work environment.
By arranging individual meetings with the team members, the project manager can understand the root cause of the conflict and take appropriate action to resolve the issue. By discussing the conflict early with the affected team members using a direct, collaborative approach, the project manager can prevent the conflict from escalating and find a mutually acceptable solution.
I think BC is correct.
E = An approach to handle FUTURE conflicts. E does not help as the conflict already occurred. E is good to avoid future conflicts.
The other reason C is good because the team is having technical conflicts.
Your approach is headon. But you misinterpreted the sentence. It actually means not to wait until end of sprint and just act on immediately. Ans is B and E.
I totally understand what you are saying. But the question is:
"Which two actions should the project manager take first to address this conflict?"
Please note the key word "THIS" in the sentence. Option E is something to prevent conflicts. The question is asking you to resolve the existing conflict at hand.
The other thing I do not like about option E is the word "DIRECT". Force/Direct conflict resolution technique results in a win/lose situation. This technique is not the ideal approach.
The question mentions that there are 2 different types of conflicts, first is the personal and the second is the technical. To resolve personal conflicts, you first connect one-on-one to understand the conflict and then gather ONLY the parties involved in the conflict to resolve the conflict. But, for technical conflicts, after understanding what the conflict is, the PM invites the entire team and come up with the best approach that most of the team agrees to.
The given options are just bad option. Therefore, I am not sure if it is BC or BE
good catch BUT the fact they do not call out the technical aspect directly in answer C, best to go with B & E. also there could be more conflict (future) so to your point, best to work on future now ("future now" - an oxymoron or play on words?) and go with BC.
Chose BE originally, but I think 'affected team members' of E are meaning those other team members, instead of the 2 team members. So better have whole team to discuss together.
never C:
C. Address the conflict during team meetings for the entire team to participate and find solutions: While team involvement is important for solving certain conflicts, addressing interpersonal conflicts in a team meeting might exacerbate tensions and create discomfort among team members.
