D. Review the priorities of the existing backlog items included in the release. Explanation: Before adding new backlog items, it's important to review the priorities of the existing backlog items. This ensures that any changes to the scope are considered in the context of the current priorities and resources, and helps the team understand the impact of the new requirements on the current plan.

Before creating new backlog items, it's essential to review the priorities of the existing backlog items to understand how the proposed changes align with the current priorities and goals of the project. This allows for a more informed discussion and decision-making process.

As the Product Owner only indicated that the scope in the first release will change, we first need to know the new priorities of the existing features. The Product Owner did not say he will implement NEW items, he might simply wants existing items to be in the first release.

Product owner has only indicated about scope change. To have more detail, it need new item should be added to backlog item. Afterwards, review of backlog item should be done. Note 1st release can have more than one sprint which means backlog items can be discussed in next spring planning.

As the project is already in the execution phase and likely working with an established backlog, the project lead should prioritize reviewing the existing backlog items included in the release. This step is crucial for understanding the current status of the project and identifying which items are affected by the proposed scope changes. Once the priorities of the existing backlog items are reviewed and aligned with the proposed changes, the project lead and the product owner can then proceed to discuss how to incorporate the new scope or adjust the backlog items in subsequent planning or retrospective meetings.
