A project manager is managing an iterative project that delivers value incrementally. Over time, the stakeholders have challenged that the team is delivering less value now than they did at the beginning of the project. The project is still predicted to be completed as planned.

How should the project manager respond to the stakeholders?

  • A. Explain to the stakeholders that progress is measured by the completion of project requirements that are tracked against the project schedule, and relay that the project is on schedule.
  • B. Explain to the stakeholders that value delivery is based on resources invested and the potential gain or loss reduction, and that each of these factors can vary over time.
  • C. Inform the stakeholders that the project prioritizes the highest business value items in the backlog first, and explain it is not unusual for the project to deliver less business value over time.
  • D. Review the value delivery schedule with the project team to understand why value delivery is decreasing, implement solutions to stabilize value delivery, and communicate the corrective actions.

Selected Answer: D
The most important thing in a project is VALUE. It must always be observed and monitored to ensure that value is maintained. Nothing is more important than value.

Selected Answer: C
Option C seems to be the right one. There is no underlying problem with the delivery, read this statement clearly "The project is still predicted to be completed as planned." So option D can be excluded!!

Selected Answer: D
D. This option involves reviewing the value delivery schedule with the project team to understand the decreasing trend in value delivery, implementing corrective actions, and communicating these actions. This response is more comprehensive as it directly addresses the issue raised by stakeholders and takes corrective steps to stabilize value delivery.

Initially thought C as well..but statement says project should be delivering value incrementally ; that reads as a steady flow of value is expected.

Selected Answer: D
What is iterative, incremental delivery? Iterative delivery means that a team delivers work frequently rather than all at once. Incremental means that they deliver it in small packets of end-to-end functionality which is usable. The only thing better than a great product is a great product that gets better frequently.

Option D is a correct action but it´s not a response, the question clearly ask "How should the project manager RESPOND to the stakeholders? Just for this detail I will go with C

Selected Answer: C
Option D suggests that the project manager should first review the value delivery schedule with the project team to understand why value delivery is decreasing and then implement solutions to stabilize the value delivery. While this might seem like a proactive approach, it makes an assumption that there is an inherent problem with the team's delivery, which might not be the case. In iterative projects, it's common to prioritize and deliver the highest business value items first. As these high-value items are delivered, the remaining items in the backlog may inherently have lesser value. Hence, over time, the perceived value of delivered increments can diminish even if the project is progressing as expected.

Ans C is correct. Value delivery is prioritized and obviously decreases over time. You cannot have the highest value saved for the end, unless there are some other dependencies or compelling reasons.
