No need for publishing the label because you want to auto apply. - create the label - create the auto apply policy - wait 12 (! not 8 or 24) hours and turn on the policy A auto appy policy has first to run in simulation mode which can take up to 12 hours: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/apply-sensitivity-label-automatically?view=o365-worldwide#learn-about-simulation-mode

"One or more sensitivity labels created and published (to at least one user) that you can select for your auto-labeling policies. " stated in article below: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/apply-sensitivity-label-automatically?view=o365-worldwide#prerequisites-for-auto-labeling-policies

If you create a auto-labeling policy, you need to assign it to a label and that label needs to be published. It's step #5 of the Auto-Label Policy workflow. https://compliance.microsoft.com/informationprotection?viewid=autolabeling The 12 hours that you mention is running it in simulation mode would be step 4 and since it's not listed correctly, and it's the 4th action, it doesn't apply here. Also documented here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/apply-sensitivity-label-automatically?view=o365-worldwide#creating-an-auto-labeling-policy

I am nearly certain [Removed] is correct. I just tested it. I never needed to publish the label, and he's right that you need to wait for simulation mode to finish for the label to begin auto applying. So, I can't help but wonder why the other articles posted here say you need to "create and publish" the sensitivity label for the auto-applying policy when you clearly don't. Since, I just tested it and you simply don't. The question as it is asked is answered 100% by [Removed]. I get the feeling something is missing here.

1. Create a label defining sensitive info type as credit card number 2. Publish the label since you can't use without publishing 3. Auto-Apply the label

Yep the article on how to do it in Purview makes this pretty clear. Skipping steps 1 & 2 in the article Step 3 Create Sensitivity Label , then configure auto labelling Step 4 Publish Labels & Scan data to auto apply labels which can take 24hrs - no need to turn on. This looks like the most up to date article. Maybe there is more than one way now?

1. New sensitivity label (Next steps: 1.1 Publish this label so users can apply it to their content 1.2 Automatically apply the label this label to sensitive content 1. 3Review prerequisites to get the most out of your encryption settings 1.4 Review an Azure Purview tutorial on how to start scanning assets and automatically apply this label) 2 (go with the 1.2 above) 3. At the final stage of new auto-label policy, you can either: - keep it OFF or -Run the policy in simulation mode, which can take 12 hours to complete. Since it is up to 12 hours, it would be 24 hours wait, for normal work day, you would not wait 12 hours anyway to turn it on, 8 hours could be too short. Answer: label > auto-label policy > wait 24 hours and turn on

But you just said it yourself, you need to publish the label first before you can assign an auto label policy? So surely the order is: (as per the suggested answer) Create Label Publish label Create auto labeling policy Waiting 24 hours would be step 4 but only 3 actions have been requested in the question.

Answer is correct. Both articles clearly state the need to publish the labels first. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/apply-sensitivity-label-automatically?view=o365-worldwide#dont-configure-a-parent-label-to-be-applied-automatically-or-recommended https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/compliance/apply-sensitivity-label-automatically?view=o365-worldwide#prerequisites-for-auto-labeling-policies
