Here is a Juniper link confirming this: https://www.juniper.net/documentation/en_US/junos/topics/task/configuration/mcast-pim-auto-rp.html "Because PIM dense mode is necessary to enable auto-RP to work, which in turns enables PIM sparse mode to work, you must configure PIM sparse-dense mode in the PIM domains that use auto-RP."
