A & D Exception traffic is traffic that requires special handling by the Routing Engine (RE) rather than being simply forwarded by the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE). This type of traffic is generally meant for the device itself rather than for transit through the device. A. ping to the local device: When you ping the local device (the router or switch itself), the packet is directed to the Routing Engine, as it requires a response from the device. This is an example of exception traffic. D. routing updates: Routing protocol updates (such as OSPF, BGP, or RIP) are destined for the Routing Engine because they are processed by the control plane to maintain the routing table. Thus, they are also considered exception traffic.

Exception traffic includes traffic that is not simply forwarded by the router but requires special handling, such as routing updates and log messages. These types of traffic are processed by the router's control plane rather than just being forwarded through the data plane.
