Answer is D. Mist recommends single hop, but can support (i.e has provision for) up to 4 hops.

Not quite, this document states up to 4 AP's connected as base AP. This redundancy allows to failover to another (amongst the aforementioned 4 AP's) base AP. The mesh is still a single hop mesh. Please review the document you kindly refer to on its first paragraph for the single hop concept and paragraph two for the 4 base AP redundancy per relay AP concept.

A Is it possible to place “mesh relay_2” after “mesh relay_1?” No, currently this is not possible since at the moment we only support single hop mesh.

Answers is D: Yes, it is possible to deploy multiple mesh relay APs on one mesh base AP. We recommend not to exceed 4 mesh relay APs, which we have tested in our environment.
