In the context of IT service management, an event is any detectable occurrence that has significance for the management of the IT infrastructure or the delivery of IT service. Events can be generated by hardware or software components, and they are often monitored to detect conditions that may require attention or investigation. Events can be the cause or indicator of incidents, problems, or other events in the IT environment. When an event triggers an incident, it's typically referred to as an "incident event."
