Exam CBAP topic 1 question 415 discussion

Actual exam question from IIBA's CBAP
Question #: 415
Topic #: 1
[All CBAP Questions]

An organization is trying to streamline its current processes to improve performance and reduce costs. A business analyst (BA) conducted a process improvement workshop and identified the following issues as the top three items to be addressed:
1. There are multiple teams to define systems, functionality, and content. In many instances multiple teams are defining the same functionalities while other functionalities are not being defined at all, leading to unclear understanding of business requirements.
2. Product specification forms are published each year. A comparison tool is used to evaluate specification between yearly releases, but does not adequately identify changes between versions and needs to be improved.
3. Training consists of a new team member shadowing a seasoned team member. There are not written training materials for formal training sources therefore training is inconsistent and not meeting the needs of the organization.
What analysis approach must the BA use to determine changes required to address the training needs?

  • A. Future state
  • B. Decision
  • C. Market
  • D. Root cause

I checked the BA approach techniques and Decision, Market and Root cause are not listed techniques, hence my choice will remain as A

Selected Answer: D
To determine the changes required to address the training needs, the Root Cause Analysis approach should be used. Root Cause Analysis (RCA) helps to identify the underlying issues that are causing the problems with the current training process. In this case, the BA needs to understand why training is inconsistent and why it is not meeting the needs of the organization. By identifying the root causes (e.g., lack of formal training materials, reliance on shadowing, lack of structure), the BA can propose solutions to address those causes and improve the training process.

This question falls under the Assess requirement changes task and seeks to define the future state of the organization in terms of its shortfalls (current state) in training. So correct answer is A Note: TRICKY!! root cause analysis and Market analysis are not techniques in this task and decision analysis though a valid technique is used to facilitate the change assessment process, not determine it.

Ph 111: he future state will be defined at a level of detail that: • allows for competing strategies to achieve the future state to be identified and assessed, • provides a clear definition of the outcomes that will satisfy the business needs, • details the scope of the solution space, • allows for value associated with the future state to be assessed, and • enables consensus to be achieved among key stakeholders.

The question suggests that the BA has conducted current state analysis of the training and even root cause analysis to determine its weakness. I believe the next step should be Future state analysis.

I think that D is correct 10.40.1 Purpose Root cause analysis is used to identify and evaluate the underlying causes of a problem. Root cause analysis uses four main activities: • Cause Identification: investigates the patterns of effects to discover the specific actions that contribute to the problem. • Action Identification: defines the corrective action that will prevent or minimize recurrence.
