Courts have two different types of jurisdiction. Personal jurisdiction refers to the court's authority over a person being sued or charged with a crime. Subject matter jurisdiction refers to the court's authority to hear cases on a particular area of the law.
Private-Sector Privacy(2020): Jurisdiction: The authority of a court to hear a particular case. A court must have jurisdiction over both the type of dispute (“subject matter jurisdiction”) and the parties (“personal jurisdiction”). Government agencies have jurisdictional limits also.
