“2.7.1.2 Local or Decentralized
Decentralization is the policy of delegating decision-making authority down to the lower levels in an organization at a distance from and below a central authority. A decentralized (or “local” or “distributed”) organization has fewer tiers in the organizational structure, a wider span of control, and a bottom-to-top flow of decision making and ideas.”
From the Book page 61
A privacy program with decentralized governance involves delegating decision-making authority to lower levels within the organization, allowing for a more flexible and responsive approach to privacy management. In a decentralized model, decision-making is not concentrated in a single team or person but is spread across different levels, enabling those closer to the day-to-day operations to make informed decisions based on their knowledge and experience. This structure allows for a bottom-to-top flow of information, where insights from lower-tier employees can inform decisions made at higher levels.
