The NAI is one example of an industry self‐regulatory framework, but there are others that are broad in nature or that apply to specific industries. For example, the Better Business Bureau operates a self‐regulatory program for organizations that advertise to children.
The Network Advertising Initiative (NAI) is a self‐regulatory program focused on digital marketing. Businesses involved in the distribution of online advertising participate in NAI as members, and NAI claims that almost every Internet ad displayed in the United States uses the technology of one of its members.
The NAI publishes a code of conduct that contains detailed requirements describing how its members must provide notice of their privacy practices, offers consumers the ability to opt out of information processing, and describes how they must implement procedures for data security, transfer, and quality.
The NAI conducts compliance reviews of its members and has the authority to sanction them and refer noncompliant companies to the Federal Trade Commission or other regulators for possible enforcement action.
