A, you should set a role, but is not strictly demanded
B, must exist a connected route
C, you will not have DHCP server in a WAN interface for example
D, not necesarily you need an IP address in the physical interface, but in this case, they are not contempling VLAN usage
Since it looks like you can't escape roles (LAN, WAN, DMZ, etc), they give you the impression they are mandatory. But they are for organizational or management purposes and do not affect functionality or connectivity. That is why A isn't within the best answer and B and D are.
D. is correct for sure.
A. should be correct in so far, that an interface role is always choosen, event if using the preselected role
"Set the role setting for the interface. Different settings will be shown or hidden when editing an interface depending on the role ..."
Fortigate Admin Guide
B. is questionable, because the routes are created automatically as soon, as an ip address is configured
A. Both interfaces must have the interface role assigned: Each interface needs a role (like LAN or DMZ) so FortiGate knows how to handle the traffic between networks.
D. Both interfaces must have IP addresses assigned: Without IPs, the interfaces can’t send or receive traffic properly.
As for B (routes in the table), it’s usually automatic, so it’s not something you have to set up manually.
