1. Initiates a login to the target 2. CHAP challenge sent to initiator 3. initiator takes shared secret and calculates value using a one-way hash function 4. Returns hash value to the target 5. Computes the expected hash value from the shared secret and compares the value received from initiator 6. If value matches, authentication is acknowledged
