A technician identified an issue on a workstation, obtained details from the user, and made a backup of the system. Which of the following should the technician do NEXT?
A.
Determine the next steps to resolve the issue and document it.
B.
Design a plan of action to resolve the issue and implement the solution.
C.
Document the findings, actions, and outcomes.
D.
Establish a theory of probable cause, researching internally or externally as needed.
"Identify the problem. • Question user and identify user changes to computer.• Perform backups before making changes.• Inquire regarding environmental or infrastructure changes.• Review system and application logs.
2.Establish a theory of probable cause (question the obvious and if necessary, conduct internal or external research based on symptoms)
Answer is D. Quote above is from COMP TIA's study guide.
for anyone struggling with the COMPTIA troubleshoot method
Step 1: Identify the problem. ...
Step 2: Establish a theory of probable cause. ...
Step 3: Test the theory to find out the cause. ...
Step 4: Create an action plan. ...
Step 5: Implement the solution or escalate as necessary. ...
Step 6: Verify full system functionality and implement preventive measures.
I think its B, because compTIA never used the phrase 'researching internally or externally as needed', That part was never in the book. It should have just been, "Establish a theory of probable cause."
I think it should be:
B. Design a plan of action to resolve the issue and implement the solution.
seeing as though he already make a backup, he already established his theory of the cause and now is establishing a plan of action to resolve the problem, and implement he solution
Don't let wording confuse you, comptia is very rigid with the troubleshooting methodology. Making a backup is seen as part of step one, as it is one of the first things you do before even Identifying the problem sometimes. The question will always show you how far down the steps the person has gone, and it says nothing about what the person has decided the issue is, so it is D.
STEPS TO TROUBLE SHOOTING
Step 1: Identify the problem
Step 2: Establish a theory of probable cause (Correct Answer. D)
Step 3: Test the theory
Step 4: Establish a plan of action/Implement the solution
Step 5: Verify full system functionality/Implement preventive measures (if applicable)
Step 6: Document
After identifying an issue, obtaining details from the user, and making a backup of the system, the next logical step in the troubleshooting process is to try to determine the root cause of the problem.
The correct answer is:
D. Establish a theory of probable cause, researching internally or externally as needed.
This step involves making an educated guess about what might be causing the issue based on the collected information, then researching or testing as needed to confirm the theory. Once a probable cause is established, the technician can then proceed with creating a plan to resolve the issue.
The CompTIA troubleshooting methodology is a 6-step process that frames the problem and guides IT pros to identify and execute a solution. The CompTIA troubleshooting methodology:
Identify the problem
Establish a theory of probable cause
Test the theory to determine the cause
Establish a plan of action to resolve the problem and implement the solution
Verify full system functionality, and, if applicable, implement preventive measures
Document findings, actions and outcomes
Answe A doesn`t make any sense. It is a bland mix of step 5 and 6.
The question describes in details the forst step: Identify the problem.
Therefore the next thing to do is step 2: Establish a Theory (answer D)
