Upon booting a workstation, a technician hears a distinct clicking sound after power is applied to the motherboard. Which of the following would MOST likely be the cause?
I want to say the reason we see wrong answers is because of a few laws Comptia has surrounding study habits. seeing as comptia is a for profit company.
D. HDD. A clicking sound after power is applied to the motherboard usually indicates a mechanical issue with the hard disk drive (HDD). This may be caused by a faulty read/write head or other internal mechanical failure. It is important to immediately back up any data on the drive and replace it as soon as possible to avoid complete failure and data loss.
HDD is the Correct answer.
A. Raid is multiple HDDs so therefore it would still be an HDD making the clicking noise
B. Is an SDD which has no moving parts too therefore cannot make any noise
C. S.M.A.R.T. is software to this cannot make any noise.
D. is a Hard Disk Drive which has spinning platters that look a little like CDs so this is the only correct answer as this is the one with moving parts that can generate a sound and make a clicking noise when broken or close to breaking
A clicking sound after power is applied to the motherboard is most likely caused by a hard disk drive (HDD) that is failing. The clicking sound is caused by the read/write head of the HDD as it tries to access the platters. If the clicking sound is continuous, then the HDD is likely to fail soon.
SMART is not a physical component, It is implemented within the firmware of the drive, which is a piece of software embedded on a chip within the drive itself. Therefore, it cannot be responsible for the clicking noise.
The answer is HDD
