As others have said, AC is the latest, but it is 5 GHz only. The protocol right before that would be 802.11n, which supports both 2.4 GHz and 5Ghz. It would be the fastest protocol that would support newer and older network clients, out of the options.

Apparently all these questions had “N” as an answer even though “AC” support both. After a bit of digging I found out why: Apparently a 802.11ac router uses “ac” ONLY for 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz is still used on the “n”. So 802.11N makes more sense as it uses 5Ghz and 2.4 Ghz on the same standard.

B. ac is right answer. it is "maximum speed possbile" and also backward compatible with "b,g,n". https://www.semiconductorstore.com/blog/2014/WiFi-standards-802-11a-b-g-n-vs-802-11ac-Which-is-Best/806/#:~:text=802.11ac%20offers%20backward%20compatibility,450%20Mbps%20on%202.4%20GHz.

AC does not support 2.4GHZ, supports both.

i think the key is "The solution needs to support new and legacy wireless network clients" legacy & network clients. 802.11N, the wireless LAN IEEE draft standard that uses multiple input/multiple output technology to boost Wi-Fi speeds to over 100Mbps, is “backward compatible” with today's 802.11a, 11b, and 11g networks. its the backward compatible part that makes it good for legacy equip
