C. Compromising I can see where you would use negotiating to reach a compromise but its not a negotiating technique

The conflict resolution technique used by the project manager in this scenario is Compromising. Compromising involves both parties making concessions in order to find a solution that is satisfactory for both parties. In this case, the project manager is taking into consideration the concerns raised by both the project sponsor and the CIO and coming up with a solution that addresses both of their concerns by rolling out the product in a pilot release, testing it, and using customer feedback to make future decisions. This solution involves both parties making some concessions and compromises to find a mutually acceptable solution.

Selected Answer: C
Compromising is achieved when each of the parties involved in the conflict gives up something to reach a solution. Everyone involved decides what they’ll give on and what they won’t give on, and eventually, through all the give-and-take, a solution is reached. Neither side wins or loses in this situation. As a result, neither side really buys into the decision that was reached. If, however, both parties make firm commitments to the resolution, then the solution can become a permanent one.

The book specifically states compromise as a step. Negotiations may be necessary as part of reaching a compromise but is not the method.

The study guide lists compromising as a conflict management technique, whereas negotiation is listed as a team acquisition technique.

The last technique is negotiating. I mentioned that this is considered an aspirational skill, and the one that I work on the most. It may be that to truly get through the conflict, some negotiation is necessary for true resolution. Usually this is combined with compromise. Negotiate to reach a compromise

Negotiating involves both parties communicating, listening, and asking questions. Sometimes negotiating uses a third party who has no vested interest in the outcome and is neutral regarding the solutions. vs. Compromising is achieved when each of the parties involved in the conflict gives up something to reach a solution.

you can hardly say the PM has no vested interest though. This is tough because based on the middle ground solution, it does seem like each side gave something up (CIO agreed to a release, sponsor agreed to tone the release down and allow more testing in the pilot), but it's unclear if they "communicated, listened and asked questions", seems more like a compromise to me.
