Shredding is not an option here. You don't need to remove the platters in order to shred/pulverize the drive

Degaussing is more efficient if it's an option. BOTH methods will render the HDDs un usable by anyone else, but degaussing is faster if you have it

I think the phrase "Remove the platters from the HDDs" implies that it's not as simple as throwing the whole drive into a shredder

Using the right degausser will guarantee that your information is no longer retrievable. Degaussing is simply a demagnetizing process to erase a hard drive or tape.
