Selected Answer: A
Since the user has reported that the keyboard and display are no longer working after returning to the office, and they usually use a docking station, the first step should be to check if the docking station is properly connected and functioning. It's possible that the docking station may not be properly connected to power or the laptop, which could prevent the external keyboard and display from working.

B Reasoning: Many docking stations provide power and functionality only when the laptop is properly powered on. If the laptop was powered off (e.g., during the vacation), docking it will not automatically turn it on. The technician should first ensure the laptop is powered on by pressing the power button. This is a common troubleshooting step when laptops in docking stations appear non-functional. Relevance to CompTIA A+ Core 1: This falls under Objective 5.2, which covers diagnosing and resolving common laptop and mobile device issues.

Why the Other Options Are Incorrect: A. Ensure the docking station is plugged in: While ensuring power to the docking station is important, the scenario specifies that the issue occurred after a vacation. The likelihood of the docking station losing power coincidentally during the vacation is low. Verifying the laptop's power state should be the first step. C. Plug the laptop in and let it charge overnight: There is no indication the laptop’s battery is drained. While charging could resolve a dead battery, the user is more likely experiencing an issue where the laptop is powered off but docked, so charging overnight is not the best first step. D. Connect the laptop directly to the network: A network connection will not resolve the primary issue of the keyboard and display not working. Addressing the laptop’s power state is a higher priority

Another garbage question. The FIRST thing you should do is take less than 5 seconds and ensure the docking station is plugged in. Then you can go on to check the device itself for issues. I choose A but likely the 'correct' answer is B.

After second thought the scenario is not making it clear that the user 'reattempted' to connect to the docking station. Therefore B would make more sense

I chose A. From the situation described it seems like the laptop may have lost all power or it wasn't plugged into the docking station correctly after they returned home from their 2 week vacation.

Selected Answer: B
Since the keyboard and display are no longer working, it's possible that the laptop didn't fully power on or wake up from a sleep or hibernation state. Pressing and releasing the power button can help reset the laptop and force it to boot up properly. This is a simple first step before diving into more complex troubleshooting.

Given the scenario, the technician should first ask the user to: B. Press and release the laptop power button. This action will help determine if the laptop is powered off or in a sleep state. If it's in sleep mode, pressing the power button should wake it up. If it's powered off, pressing the power button should turn it on.
