A user tries to turn on a computer but gets the following error message: Bootable device not found. The computer had no issues yesterday. Which of the following is the most likely reason for this error?
The most likely cause for the "Bootable device not found" error is a misconfigured boot device in the BIOS. This could happen due to a recent hardware change, a power outage, or a BIOS update.
Here's why the other options are less likely:
A. The HDD is malfunctioning: While a failing hard drive can cause boot issues, it would typically result in error messages related to the hard drive itself, such as "Disk read error" or "Operating system not found."
B. The mouse and keyboard are not connected: The absence of a mouse and keyboard would not prevent the computer from booting.
D. The network cable is unplugged: The network cable is not directly involved in the boot process.
By checking and correcting the boot device priority in the BIOS, the technician can usually resolve the issue and allow the computer to boot normally.

Suppose the boot order in the BIOS is misconfigured or changed (e.g., the system is trying to boot from a network drive, USB, or an empty drive). In that case, the system will be unable to find the correct bootable device, leading to the "Bootable device not found" error. The HDD should be checked after verifying the BIOS settings.
C is possible but the question is asking for the MOST likely issue. It is far more likely that the drive is going bad than the user going into their BIOS settings and manually selecting an incorrect drive on a working computer.
No it's not more likely for the hdd to be failing. We have no history of this hdd we don't know how long it's been in operation what it's used for or anything. Also, it states that there was no previous issues this would indicate to me that boot device configuration has changed.
The hard drive boot sector or partition table is corrupted. If this important metadata on your hard drive becomes severely corrupted or your drive had bad sectors, your hard drive, or at least the partition containing your Operating System (OS), will appear as an empty drive
While a malfunctioning hard drive can certainly prevent a computer from booting, the error message "Bootable device not found" typically indicates that the system cannot locate a bootable device, such as a hard drive or a bootable USB drive.
If the hard drive were completely malfunctioning, the system might not even power on or would display specific error messages related to the hard drive. In this scenario, the computer is able to boot but cannot find a valid operating system to load. This suggests a configuration issue, such as the incorrect boot order or a missing or corrupted boot sector.
Therefore, while a hard drive failure is a potential cause of boot problems, it's less likely to be the root cause in this specific case.
