An administrator notices that on an intermittent basis the virtual machines are running slowly. The virtual machines are correctly sized, and the hardware has enough free resources to cope with demand. Which of the following is most likely the cause?

  • A. The physical servers are not able to draw enough power.
  • B. The physical servers do not have enough network bandwidth.
  • C. The physical servers are throttling due to overheating.
  • D. The physical servers are contending for resources.

C The physical servers are throttling due to overheating. This means that the servers are reducing their performance to prevent damage from excessive heat. This can cause the virtual machines to run slowly, as they depend on the physical servers’ resources. To avoid this, the servers need adequate cooling and ventilation, as well as monitoring of their temperature and fan speed. According to the CompTIA Core1 objectives, one of the environmental factors that can affect system performance is overheating. A research paper on thermal management of servers also states that overheating can lead to performance degradation, reliability issues, and energy inefficiency

Given that the physical servers have enough resources, the most likely cause of the intermittent slowdowns is network congestion or latency. Network issues can significantly impact the performance of virtual machines, especially when they rely heavily on network resources. GG

Selected Answer: D
The intermittent slowness in virtual machines, despite having enough free resources, suggests a potential contention issue. This could be related to how resources are allocated or managed among the virtual machines on the physical servers. Contention occurs when multiple virtual machines compete for the same resources, leading to performance degradation. (chatgpt)

CPU thermal throttling occurs when the temperature of the CPU (Central Processing Unit) reaches a specific threshold set by the manufacturer to protect the processor from overheating.

I agree with both of you Farticus and Flarga. The statement in the question rule out D to be the right option from my view as the hardware has enough free resources to cope with demand, hence I go with C.

I agree with you Flarga. It is C the server is throttling the CPU because of overheating. I was able to verify the same in an article that can be found here: https://www.makeuseof.com/what-is-cpu-thermal-throttling/

Honestly, C sounds like a more solid answer here. The question states that "...the hardware has enough free resources to cope with demand". If this is referring to the physical servers, I can not confidently accept D as the answer. For me, it was between A and C, but I am going with C as it seems like a more common issue.

It's not just having the necessary hardware resources, it comes down to how those resources are adequately managed and allocated properly
