Disingenuous on CompTIA's part to preach to "follow your company's policy" then push a question like this over an exact order. From what I'm gathering in CompTIA's Server+ Student Guide and run-of-the-mill searches "C. Asset management documentation" is the correct answer here.
*I originally wanted to go with D. but it seems there are some more impactful steps in non-utilization versus documentation.
C. Asset management documentation
C. Asset management documentation:
Before decommissioning a file server, it's essential to check the asset management documentation.
Asset management documentation includes details about the server, such as its location, purpose, owner, and any other relevant information. Verifying this documentation helps ensure that the decommissioning process aligns with organizational policies and doesn't lead to unintended consequences, such as the loss of critical information.
Makes more sense to do this before D
Before decommissioning and wiping a file server, the technician should first verify that the server is no longer in use and that no crucial data or services are still relying on it. Therefore, the first thing to verify is:
D. Non-utilization
This ensures that decommissioning the server won't disrupt any ongoing operations or result in data loss. Once confirmed, other processes like asset management documentation, recycling policies, and media destruction methods can be considered.
