Which of the following protocols operates without a port number assignment?
A) SNMP - Port number (161/162)
B) TCP - No port number because it is a transport layer
C) SSH - Port number (22)
D) DHCP - Port number (67/68)
The correct answer is D. DHCP.
DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) operates without a port number assignment. DHCP is a protocol used for assigning IP addresses and other network settings to devices on a network. It uses a broadcast mechanism to communicate with devices, and therefore does not require a specific port number assignment.
Here's why the other options are incorrect:
A. SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) typically uses ports 161 and 162 for communication.
B. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is a transport-layer protocol that uses port numbers to identify specific applications and services.
C. SSH (Secure Shell) typically uses port 22 for secure remote access and management.
DHCP's broadcast mechanism allows it to operate without a specific port number assignment, making it the correct answer.
This is wrong sir/ma’am! DHCP does opterate on a port. Client side port 67 and user side port 68. Look it up.
When we doing these q&a also do research and not just blurt things via text.
TCP and UDP are communication standards used by the communicate with services (on ports). TCP and UDP themselves, do not use ports; services/applications use ports.
D. DHCP
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) operates without a port number assignment. DHCP is a network protocol used to automatically assign IP addresses and other network configuration parameters to devices on a network. While DHCP relies on UDP (User Datagram Protocol), it doesn't require a specific port number assignment for communication, unlike some other protocols like SNMP, SSH, and TCP, which do have associated port numbers (e.g., SNMP uses ports 161 and 162, SSH typically uses port 22, and TCP uses various port numbers depending on the service or application).
This is so dumb I don’t think even ChatGPT could’ve done this. DHCP DEFINITELY has port assignments. Even in your answer you state TCP “uses various port numbers”. The sooner you revise this the better lol.
Agreed, DCHP utilizes ports 67 & 68. TCP does not have a port number.
