Refer to the exhibit. Rapid PVST+ mode is on the same VLAN on each switch. Which switch becomes the root bridge and why?

  • A. SW4, because its priority is highest and its MAC address is lower
  • B. SW1, because its priority is the lowest and its MAC address is higher
  • C. SW2, because its MAC address is the highest
  • D. SW3, because its priority is the highest

This diagram is cut off at the top, right? The given answer is wrong because a switch does not become the root bridge by having the highest MAC address. First criterion is the switch with the lowest priority will become the root bridge, but if all switches have the same priority then the switch with the lowest MAC will become the root bridge

lowest bridge/switch priority value = Higher priority to be selected as the root bridge. The wording is confusing. I don't think they are referring to the value but instead to the priority itself.

Even by that logic given answer can't be right, SW4 bridge is higher than sw3 so there's no way SW4 becomes root

your answer is wrong. look at the exhibit once more and notice the actual priority values given and you'll see that the bridge priority value for SW4 is lowest, indicating that its actual priority is highest.

I had this question on my exam, cut off info is: SW1 has prioroty 8192 and MAC ending with 41 SW2 has priority 16384 and MAC ending with 43 So SW4 will become a root bridge, but not because it's priority is highest, broken answer i guess, may be just bad wording as always

the switch with the highest bridge ID (that is, the lowest numerical ID value) is elected as the root bridge. If all switches are configured with the default priority (32768), the switch with the lowest MAC address in the VLAN becomes the root bridge. Configuring Rapid PVST+, Page 5

There is no correct answer. Insufficient information. The options are not known to be accurate statements, so there's no way to tell.

Selected Answer: A
Switch with the Lowest Bridge ID is elected as the root bridge. Bridge ID consists of both the MAC address and Bridge priority. Bridge priority takes precedence over MAC address when selecting the root bridge. A lower switch priority value means a higher priority to be selected as the root bridge A lower MAC address means a higher priority to be selected as the root bridge B & C are wrong If 2 switches have the same priority, then the switch with the lowest MAC address will be selected as the root bridge. D is incorrect because SW3 has the same priority as SW4 but SW4 has a lower MAC address giving it a lower bridge ID. A is the correct answer PS: the answer might differ if the exhibit is complete, it's cut off in our case but the steps to solve the question are the same. https://ccna-200-301.online/stp-operations/

PS: The default priority value for all Cisco switches is the decimal value 32768. The range is 0 to 61440 in increments of 4096.

The layer 2 device with the lowest bridge ID (bridge priority + MAC address) is elected as the root. -All in One CCT/CCNA Routing and Switching (B) SW1 has the LOWEST PRIORITY. We're done!

C and D are the wrong answers, the correct answer is A, higher priority means lower priority number + lower MAC = Lower Bridge ID

Tricky question! Do not confuse highest priority with highest priority value! A high STP priority = the lowest priority value in the BID.

I don't think these semantic gymnastics are relevant. When they say priority, they're most certainly referring to the priority *number*, as is configured by the "spanning-tree vlan <vlan-number> priority <priority>" command.
