Planning Approaches
To develop a successful network design, a proper planning approach is required to build
a coherent strategy for the overall design. Network designers can follow two common
planning approaches to develop business-driven network designs and facilitate the design
decisions:
■ Strategic planning approach: Typically targets planning to long-term goals and
strategies. For example, a service provider needs to migrate its core from legacy
(ATM) to be based on MPLS instead. The design decision in this approach has to
cater to long-term goals and plans.
■ Tactical planning approach: Typically targets planning to overcome an issue or to
achieve a short-term goal. For instance, an enterprise might need to provide remote
access to some partners temporally (for example, over the Internet) until dedicated
extranet connectivity is provisioned. Design decisions in this approach generally
need to provide what is required within a limited period of time and are not
necessarily required to consider long-term goals.
