Actual exam question from Cisco's 300-715
Question #: 105
Topic #: 1
[All 300-715 Questions]

An administrator is trying to collect metadata information about the traffic going across the network to gain added visibility into the hosts. This information will be used to create profiling policies for devices using Cisco ISE so that network access policies can be used.
What must be done to accomplish this task?

  • A. Configure the DHCP probe within Cisco ISE.
  • B. Configure NetFlow to be sent to the Cisco ISE appliance.
  • C. Configure the RADIUS profiling probe within Cisco ISE.
  • D. Configure SNMP to be used with the Cisco ISE appliance.

Selected Answer: B
The answer is - Configure NetFlow to be sent to the Cisco ISE appliance. NetFlow is a network protocol that allows network devices to collect and export flow data. This data can be used to gain insights into network traffic, such as the source and destination IP addresses, the ports used, and the amount of traffic. Cisco ISE can be configured to receive NetFlow data. This data can then be used to create profiling policies for devices. These policies can be used to control access to the network, such as which devices are allowed to access certain resources.

From IBMs website... What is NetFlow? NetFlow, a network protocol developed for Cisco routers by Cisco Systems, is widely used to collect metadata about the IP traffic flowing across network devices such as routers, switches and hosts. The traffic flow data informs a company’s IT professionals as to how much traffic there is, where it’s coming from and going to, and the paths being used.

Selected Answer: B
The NetFlow probe allows the collection of metadata information about the traffic going across the network to gain added visibility into the hosts. This information can be used to create profiling policies for devices using Cisco ISE so that network access policies can be used. SNMP query probe is used to query SNMP enabled devices for information such as system uptime, CPU and memory usage, and network interfaces, and DHCP probe is used to detect devices that obtain their IP address and hostname via DHCP.

'metadata information about the traffic going across the network' sounds like NetFlow to me. So B is correct?

You could argue for HTTP, but best answer is DHCP.

Netflow collect only traffic data, not metadata Cisco CCNP book: DHCP can be one of the most useful data sources for an endpoint device. A primary use of DHCP in profiling has been to capture the device MAC address, but it can also be used to capture other probes as well. The true value in the DHCP probe is that many other attributes can be gleaned to help identify the type of endpoint. As HTTP carries User-Agent field, DHCP requests carry a Class-Identifier field that helps identify the operating system of a device. Some organizations have been known to use a custom DHCP Class-Identifier string to help identify a device as a corporate asset.

NetFlow is a protocol used to collect metadata on IP traffic flows traversing a network device. Developed by Cisco Systems, NetFlow is used to record metadata about IP traffic flows traversing a network device such as a router, switch, or host. A NetFlow-enabled device generates metadata at the interface level and sends flow data information to a flow collector, where the flow records are stored to enable network traffic analytics and management. A network operator can use NetFlow data to determine network throughput, packet loss, and traffic congestion at a specific interface level. NetFlow data also supports other network-level monitoring use cases such as DDoS detection and BGP peering.
