D and E is right because STP goes from blocked, listening, learning, and forwarding and RSTP goes from Discarding, Learning, and Forwarding

D and E are correct, however I think the question is poorly phrased. Though RSTP does use only thee port states (forwarding, learning, discarding), it doesn't really transition "through" forwarding.

To Answer Your Question: When considering the transition states in RSTP, the ports transition through Blocking and Learning before reaching the Forwarding state. So, Forwarding is indeed a state that a port can end up in, but it’s not considered a transitional state through which the port moves during the RSTP process. Instead, it’s the final operational state for ports that are actively forwarding traffic. Therefore, the Correct Answer to Your Question: The two states a switch port transitions through while using RSTP (802.1w), aside from discarding, are indeed: A. Blocking D. Learning This is because "Blocking" and "Learning" are the states a port transitions through as it moves towards "Forwarding." "Forwarding" is the endpoint state but not one of the transitional states.

Poor question - there are not two correct answers. RSTP does not transition through "Forwarding". Forwarding is a steady state, not transitional.

Understand Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (802.1w) - Cisco "... Port States There are only three port states left in RSTP that correspond to the three possible operational states. The 802.1D disabled, blocking, and listening states are merged into a unique 802.1w discarding state. STP (802.1D) Port State - Disabled -> Blocking -> Listening -> Learning -> Forwarding RSTP (802.1w) Port State - Discarding -> Learning -> Forwarding ..."
