How do the MAC address table and TCAM differ?

  • A. TCAM is populated from the ARP file, and the MAC address table is populated from the switch configuration file
  • B. TCAM stores Layer 2 forwarding information, and the MAC address table stores QoS information
  • C. TCAM lookups can match only 1s and 0s, and MAC address lookups can match 1s, 0s and a third "care/don't care" state
  • D. TCAM is a type of memory and the MAC address table is a logical structure

TCAM: 1. A special type of memory for high-speed lookups. 2. Dedicated to packet classification and forwarding. 3. Stores complex forwarding information, such as Layer 2/Layer 3 forwarding, ACLs, and QoS. 4. Three possible results: true (0), false (1), and don’t care (X). 5. High speed and flexibility, suitable for complex packet processing. MAC Address Table: 1. A data structure that stores MAC addresses and their port information. 2. Typically implemented using RAM. 3. Stores MAC addresses and their associated ports for Layer 2 forwarding. 4. Two results: true (0) and false (1). 5. Slower speed and less flexibility.

Selected Answer: D
TCAM (Ternary Content-Addressable Memory) is a specialised type of memory used in network devices for high-speed table lookups. It stores information related to forwarding decisions, including Layer 2 and Layer 3 forwarding information. The MAC address table, however, is a logical data structure used by switches to store MAC addresses and their associated port information. It's typically implemented using RAM (Random Access Memory) within the switch's hardware.

Mac address-table is populated as traffic ingresses into the port from hosts. Not sure the 2nd part of the answer in A is quite right. It seems to suggest that the only way to populate it would be with a static entry.
