The primary reason the supply chain has evolved is due to better communications through technological advancement. Cost savings may be one of the ultimate objectives (along with customer service), but the REASON supply chains have evolved into their complex structure of today is due to increased communications, most notably over the internet.

I believe communication is correct. evolution of the supply chain is the question, and the main reason sc evolved was the introduction of computers which allowed functional departments to communicate better (share information)

Isn't the objective of increased communication leading to increase in cost savings. So increased cost savings is the ultimate objective.
