Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 692 discussion

A company copies 200 TB of data from a recent ocean survey onto AWS Snowball Edge Storage Optimized devices. The company has a high performance computing (HPC) cluster that is hosted on AWS to look for oil and gas deposits. A solutions architect must provide the cluster with consistent sub-millisecond latency and high-throughput access to the data on the Snowball Edge Storage Optimized devices. The company is sending the devices back to AWS.
Which solution will meet these requirements?

  • A. Create an Amazon S3 bucket. Import the data into the S3 bucket. Configure an AWS Storage Gateway file gateway to use the S3 bucket. Access the file gateway from the HPC cluster instances.
  • B. Create an Amazon S3 bucket. Import the data into the S3 bucket. Configure an Amazon FSx for Lustre file system, and integrate it with the S3 bucket. Access the FSx for Lustre file system from the HPC cluster instances.
  • C. Create an Amazon S3 bucket and an Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) file system. Import the data into the S3 bucket. Copy the data from the S3 bucket to the EFS file system Access the EFS file system from the HPC cluster instances.
  • D. Create an Amazon FSx for Lustre file system. Import the data directly into the FSx for Lustre file system. Access the FSx for Lustre file system from the HPC cluster instances.

Selected Answer: B
The correct answer is B. HPC clusters require consistent low-latency and high-throughput access, and Amazon FSx for Lustre is specifically optimized for these use cases, as it provides a high-performance file system that is well-suited for processing large amounts of data. The data can be imported into Amazon S3 from the Snowball Edge devices, then Amazon FSx for Lustre can be seamlessly integrated with S3, enabling HPC workloads to process the data directly with minimal latency, some relevant AWS documentation about import data from s3: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/storage/automatically-import-objects-from-amazon-s3-into-amazon-fsx-for-lustre/

The ans should be D, HPC is one of the main use case of FSx for Lustre.

FSx for Lustre makes it easy and cost-effective to launch and run the popular, high-performance Lustre file system. You use Lustre for workloads where speed matters, such as machine learning, high performance computing (HPC), video processing, and financial modeling. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/fsx/latest/LustreGuide/what-is.html

The reason why D is incorrect is that you cannot import data from Snowball Edge to FSx for Lustre directly, the only way is via S3, and Snowball Edge devices are designed to securely transfer data to AWS services, particularly Amazon S3, Snowball Edge devices are designed to securely transfer data to AWS services, particularly Amazon S3.

When you provision an HDD Lustre file system with an SSD cache, Amazon FSx creates an SSD cache that is automatically sized to 20 percent of the file system's HDD storage capacity. Doing this provides sub-millisecond latencies and higher IOPS for frequently accessed files. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/fsx/latest/LustreGuide/performance.html
