Exam AWS-SysOps topic 1 question 521 discussion

Exam question from Amazon's AWS-SysOps
Question #: 521
Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

The amount of data a company must back up has been increasing, and storage space is quickly running out. There is no budget to purchase new backup software that is capable of backing up data directly to the cloud.
What is the MOST cost-effective way to make storage available to the company's legacy backup system?

  • A. Launch an Amazon EC2 instance, add large Amazon EBS volumes, and connect using VPN
  • B. Ship backup tapes to AWS for storage in secure AWS Availability Zones
  • C. Use AWS Snowball on a weekly basis to transfer data to Amazon Glacier
  • D. Use AWS Storage Gateway to present a VTL using iSCSI to the legacy application

Selected Answer: D
This approach is cost-effective because it eliminates the need to purchase new backup software or invest in additional storage infrastructure. It leverages the benefits of AWS storage services and provides a seamless integration with your existing backup system.

Correct answer is D. D. presents the most cost effective option. Snowball costs $300 per task, excluding other related costs such as delivery...that is atleast $1,200 a month! VTL via iSCSI interfaces only costs $0.004 per GB-month of data stored for Glacier and $0.00099 per GB-month of data stored for Glacier Deep Archive. Correct answer is D. https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/pricing/

AWS Snowball Edge and AWS Storage Gateway are primarily classified as "Data Transfer" and "Data Backup" tools respectively.

Snowball has a minimum $300 per transfer fee. Based on this and that data size is not given the most cost-effective would be D.

D Reason C doesn't make sense: - "backup directly to the cloud" - not Snowball - how would you recover from backup whilst Snowball is in transit? (est 1 week turnaround)

If you need to back up multiple times, then snowball is not going to help. Storage Gateway is a one time setup. So, D looks to be a better option.

Answer C is correct because snowball is cheaper including glacier. So this one is cost effective solution. Storing a data on S3 is costly and also they need to create a retention policy to archive data to glacier.

I agree with D. "Use AWS Storage Gateway to present a VTL using iSCSI to the legacy application". The other giveway in the question is that you need "to make storage available to the companys legacy backup system". Snowball doesn't do that, but using a VTL does.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the question state that they have no more budget for backup application. For AWS VTL to work it needs a backup application to worked. My answer is still C https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/vtl/setup-demo/

AWS Faq: Q: When should I consider using Snowball instead of the Internet? Snowball is a strong choice for data transfer if you need to more securely and quickly transfer terabytes to many petabytes of data to AWS. Snowball can also be the right choice if you don’t want to make expensive upgrades to your network infrastructure, if you frequently experience large backlogs of data, if you're located in a physically isolated environment, or if you're in an area where high-speed Internet connections are not available or cost prohibitive.
