Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

A SysOps Administrator receives reports of an Auto Scaling group failing to scale when the nodes running Amazon Linux in the cluster are constrained by high memory utilization.
What should the Administrator do to enable scaling to better adapt to the high memory utilization?

  • A. Create a custom script that pipes memory utilization to Amazon S3, then, scale with an AWS Lambda-powered event
  • B. Install the Amazon CloudWatch memory monitoring scripts, and create a custom metric based on the script's results

Selected Answer: B
By installing the CloudWatch memory monitoring scripts on the instances in the Auto Scaling group, you can collect memory utilization data. This data can be used to create a custom metric in CloudWatch that reflects the memory utilization of the instances. Once the custom metric is created, you can configure scaling policies based on the memory utilization metric. This allows the Auto Scaling group to scale up or down based on the memory demands of the application.

The CloudWatch monitoring scripts are deprecated We recommend that you use the CloudWatch agent to collect metrics and logs. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/monitoring-scripts-intro.html

for B, How is it solving the problem? Question is "to enable scaling to better adapt to the high memory utilization", cloud metrics is good to monitor not enable scaling, I would go with D

default cloud metrics does not have Memory, thus will need to have custom script to send data to be monitored. App ELB will still forward traffic even if memory is high unless instance is marked as unhealthy.

Using a load balancer does not address instances failing to scale based on memory utilization.
