For those who are asking why do we need a VPN connection, it is one of the prerequisites for AD Connector (VPN or DX but of course VPN is easier and much cheaper). https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/security/how-to-connect-your-on-premises-active-directory-to-aws-using-ad-connector/
