Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 284 discussion

A company is hosting 60 TB of production-level data in an Amazon S3 bucket. A solutions architect needs to bring that data on premises for quarterly audit requirements. This export of data must be encrypted while in transit. The company has low network bandwidth in place between AWS and its on-premises data center.
What should the solutions architect do to meet these requirements?

  • A. Deploy AWS Migration Hub with 90-day replication windows for data transfer.
  • B. Deploy an AWS Storage Gateway volume gateway on AWS. Enable a 90-day replication window to transfer the data.
  • C. Deploy Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS), with lifecycle policies enabled, on AWS. Use it to transfer the data.
  • D. Deploy an AWS Snowball device in the on-premises data center after completing an export job request in the AWS Snowball console.

Snowball is outdated. Snowball Edge has replaced it. Snowball Edge is not in any of the options. Storage Gateway is the most correct answer.

the question doesnt provide link speed, so you cannot assume any live sync tools without enough information. what if the link is eg 512kb?

Great Job. The Answer is clearly D here. Snowball is PETABYTE Scale according to Neal Davis. This meets low BW reqs also and security component.

Initially, I was thinking for Snowball ( option D). But it seems to me, there is a catch "Audit requirement in every qtr" i.e. , data has to bring home in 3 every months /order snowball every time which seems bit costly to me & storage gateway seems more realistic.

D looks good. 60TB is a lot to transfer. There are no such term "replication window" for AWS Storage Gateway.

I think the size of a snowball is 50TB or 80TB. so it is enough by ordering 1.

Agree with D, 60 tb and low bandwidth means sending through the network dont seem realistic, and is the perfect scenario for snowball

10mb/s x 3600 x 24 = 0.86tb/day, too enough to copy 60 tb in 90 days.

So I am looking at B only because you keep it there and you can use it every 3 months without having to order the snowball from Amazon....Now I'm not sure about the 90 day stuff, which sounds OK if exists.

Snowball Features AWS Snowball with the Snowball device has the following features: 80 TB and 50 TB models are available in US Regions; 50 TB model available in all other AWS Regions. Enforced encryption protects your data at rest and in physical transit. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/snowball/latest/ug/whatissnowball.html

60Mpbs link takes around 90+ days to transfer 60TB.. low bw link must be far less than 60M

Snowball has default encryption enabled. Volume GWY is generally used to back up data from on prem to AWS/S3.. not the other way around.

D is the only one that doesn't rely on link BW. We know it's low BW and we don't know the actual bps so it's impossible to calculate if the other options (like B) will work for this scenario.

I opt for Answer B bcos the question states " This data export must be encrypted in transit. The corporation uses a low-bandwidth network connection between AWS and its on-premises data center. " which means online data transfer with SSL is asked for. Storage GW is used for online data transfer and supports SSL. Whereas Answer D Snow family devices are for offline data transfer with data-at-rest encryption.

Exam question may not have been updated from "snowball" to "snowball edge". The fact is, the answer is D. You could have data in matter of days with Snowball, vs. "deploying" anything new with a 90 day replication window. The "low network bandwidth" and encryption in "transit" is clearly suggesting snowball.

D. Please see https://aws.amazon.com/snowball/faqs/ You can transfer data in to AWS or " out " of AWS. Q: What is AWS Snowball? AWS Snowball is a service that provides secure, rugged devices, so you can bring AWS computing and storage capabilities to your edge environments, and "transfer data into and out of AWS" Also " Snowball Edge is intended to serve as a data transport solution for moving high volumes of data into and out of a designated AWS Region.
