Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 88 discussion

A company recently implemented hybrid cloud connectivity using AWS Direct Connect and is migrating data to Amazon S3. The company is looking for a fully managed solution that will automate and accelerate the replication of data between the on-premises storage systems and AWS storage services.
Which solution should a solutions architect recommend to keep the data private?

  • A. Deploy an AWS DataSync agent for the on-premises environment. Configure a sync job to replicate the data and connect it with an AWS service endpoint.
  • B. Deploy an AWS DataSync agent for the on-premises environment. Schedule a batch job to replicate point-in-time snapshots to AWS.
  • C. Deploy an AWS Storage Gateway volume gateway for the on-premises environment. Configure it to store data locally, and asynchronously back up point-in- time snapshots to AWS.
  • D. Deploy an AWS Storage Gateway file gateway for the on-premises environment. Configure it to store data locally, and asynchronously back up point-in-time snapshots to AWS.

Ans is A: You can use AWS DataSync with your Direct Connect link to access public service endpoints or private VPC endpoints. When using VPC endpoints, data transferred between the DataSync agent and AWS services does not traverse the public internet or need public IP addresses, increasing the security of data as it is copied over the network.

For initial migration & accelerated transfer Datasync is right solution. Storage Gateway is used once initial data is transferred and you want to sync incremental data.

A is correct. DataSync is for actual data transfer from on-premises to AWS whereas Storage Gateway is to retain access to the data that is transferred to AWS.

My doubt is for the term "data replication". Is it sure that we're talking of a migration and it's not a retain access scenario for wich the Storage Gateway is the solution for?

"recently implemented hybrid cloud connectivity using AWS Direct Connect and is migrating data to Amazon S3" -> so it is a data migration

Selected Answer: A
DataSYNC is for moving/transferring/migrating on-prem data to AWS. Storage Gateway is for backups.

Q: When do I use AWS DataSync and when do I use AWS Storage Gateway? A: Use AWS DataSync to migrate existing data to Amazon S3, and subsequently use the File Gateway configuration of AWS Storage Gateway to retain access to the migrated data and for ongoing updates from your on-premises file-based applications. You can use a combination of DataSync and File Gateway to minimize your on-premises infrastructure while seamlessly connecting on-premises applications to your cloud storage. AWS DataSync enables you to automate and accelerate online data transfers to AWS Storage services. After the initial data transfer phase using AWS DataSync, File Gateway provides your on-premises applications with low latency access to the migrated data. When using DataSync with NFS shares, POSIX metadata from your source on-premises storage is preserved, and permissions from the source storage apply when accessing your files using File Gateway. when i see this question at the first time, I read a question they want query acceleration so I pick storage volume gateway because in Cached mode we can find data because we let data in local, so we can query faster and also it is different with file storage gateway so we can't this data in S3. So it is private. But it want acceleration with data replication so answer is A.

Ans = A Storage GW is for hybrid synchronization. That was already established, use DataSync instead.
