Exam AWS-SysOps topic 1 question 835 discussion

Exam question from Amazon's AWS-SysOps
Question #: 835
Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

A SysOps Administrator is maintaining an application that runs on Amazon EC2 instances behind an Application Load Balancer (ALB). Users are reporting errors when attempting to launch the application. The Administrator notices an increase in the HTTPCode_ELB_5xx_Count Amazon CloudWatch metric for the load balancer.
What is a possible cause for this increase?

  • A. The ALB is associated with private subnets within the VPC.
  • B. The ALB received a request from a client, but the client closed the connection.
  • C. The ALB security group is not configured to allow inbound traffic from the users.
  • D. The ALB target group does not contain healthy EC2 instances.

Selected Answer: B
Option B is the most likely cause for the increase in the HTTPCode_ELB_5xx_Count metric. The ALB received a request from a client, but the client closed the connection before the request could be fulfilled by the backend instances. This could happen if there are issues with the backend instances, such as high load, application errors, or other issues causing the instances to return errors.

Why are we sure C is wrong? Wouldn't lack of allow rules on security group cause connection timeout (5xx error)? It's inbound, so it won't pass the traffic until it originates from EC2 instances (outbound traffic, stateful rule if outbound is allowed).
