Exam AWS-SysOps topic 1 question 93 discussion

Exam question from Amazon's AWS-SysOps
Question #: 93
Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

A sys admin is maintaining an application on AWS. The application is installed on EC2 and user has configured ELB and Auto Scaling. Considering future load increase, the user is planning to launch new servers proactively so that they get registered with ELB. How can the user add these instances with Auto Scaling?

  • A. Increase the desired capacity of the Auto Scaling group
  • B. Increase the maximum limit of the Auto Scaling group
  • C. Launch an instance manually and register it with ELB on the fly
  • D. Decrease the minimum limit of the Auto Scaling group
Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A 🗳️
A user can increase the desired capacity of the Auto Scaling group and Auto Scaling will launch a new instance as per the new capacity. The newly launched instances will be registered with ELB if Auto Scaling group is configured with ELB. If the user decreases the minimum size the instances will be removed from Auto
Scaling. Increasing the maximum size will not add instances but only set the maximum instance cap.

Tricky question. "future" is a trap, "proactive" is a clue. So answer should be A.

A is the answer to launch new machines, you need to increase the desired capacity. Max capacity does not launch any instance, it just limits how many instances can be running in that ASG

you can not increase desire capacity unless the max capacity is increased e.g if the max capacity is 4 and you have increased the desired capacity to 5, it will not work as the max capacity is 4

I see your point Auto Scaling Group has 3 capacity setting (Min, Desire, Max). This question does not specify the Max and desire value. Desire value is always lower than max value. You may increase the desire value to achieve the goal as long as it does not exceed the Max value

A As and when new instanced need to be added, just increment the desired capacity and AS will spin new instances that matches the desired capacity. Increasing the maximum limit will only set the limit :)

proactively suggests the current levels of provisioning i.e. desired capacity - rather than min or max suggesting future levels of provisioning.
