A. Securing the virtualization layer - AWS is responsible for securing physical hardware and the virtualization layer that runs AWS services.
D. Patching the operating system on Amazon RDS instances. - AWS manages the underlying operating system and software stack with RDS.
Choice "D" can't be correct. Directly from the link by petercorn: The customer assumes responsibility and management of the guest operating system (including updates and security patches), other associated application software as well as the configuration of the AWS provided security group firewall.
D is correct. The trick is they are talking about Amazon RDS - the database service. They are responsible for the hardware, database engine and any O/S patching. There is an article here : https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/USER_UpgradeDBInstance.Maintenance.html
