Exam AWS Certified SAP on AWS - Specialty PAS-C01 topic 1 question 72 discussion

A company is running its SAP S/4HANA system on AWS. The company needs to retain database backups for the previous 30 days. The company is taking full online backups by using SAP HANA Studio and is storing the backup files on General Purpose SSD (gp3) Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) volumes. The company needs to reduce the cost of this storage.

What should the company do to achieve the LOWEST cost for the backup storage?

  • A. Continue to use SAP HANA Studio to back up the SAP HANA database to gp3 EBS volumes. After each backup is completed, use Linux shell scripts to move the backup to Amazon S3. Set up an S3 Lifecycle configuration to delete the backups that are older than 30 days.
  • B. Continue to use SAP HANA Studio to back up the SAP HANA database. Use Throughput Optimized HDD (st1) EBS volumes to store each backup. After each backup is completed, use Linux shell scripts to move the backup to Amazon S3. Set up an S3 Lifecycle configuration to delete the backups that are older than 30 days.
  • C. Use AWS Backup to take full online backups of the SAP HANA database.
  • D. Continue to use SAP HANA Studio to back up the SAP HANA database. Use AWS Backint Agent for SAP HANA to store each backup. Set up an Amazon S3 Lifecycle configuration to delete the backups that are older than 30 days.

While i agree with acethetest100 that AWS Backup is able to backup HANA. However, C does not provide a solution for the requirement of keeping the backup for 90 days. I vote for D as it does address all the requirements.

Why not using AWS backup to perform HANA backups directly to S3? It's supported by SAP https://me.sap.com/notes/1656250/E

D: This option allows the company to continue using SAP HANA Studio for backups, but it utilizes the AWS Backint Agent for SAP HANA to store the backup directly in Amazon S3, which is more cost effective than using EBS volumes. The Lifecycle configuration in S3 can automatically delete backups older than 30 days, further optimizing storage costs.

D. AWS Backint Agent for SAP HANA is an SAP-certified backup and restore solution for SAP HANA workloads running on Amazon EC2 instances. AWS Backint Agent backs up your SAP HANA database to Amazon S3 and restores it using SAP management tools, such as SAP HANA Cockpit, SAP HANA Studio, or SQL commands. AWS Backint Agent supports full, incremental, differential, and log backup of SAP HANA databases and catalogs to Amazon S3. There is no cost to use AWS Backint Agent. You only pay for the underlying AWS services you use. AWS Backint Agent for SAP HANA is available in all commercial regions.
