Exam AWS-SysOps topic 1 question 112 discussion

Exam question from Amazon's AWS-SysOps
Question #: 112
Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

A user has stored data on an encrypted EBS volume. The user wants to share the data with his friend's AWS account. How can user achieve this?

  • A. Create an AMI from the volume and share the AMI
  • B. Copy the data to an unencrypted volume and then share
  • C. Take a snapshot and share the snapshot with a friend
  • D. If both the accounts are using the same encryption key then the user can share the volume directly
Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: B 🗳️
AWS EBS supports encryption of the volume. It also supports creating volumes from existing snapshots provided the snapshots are created from encrypted volumes. If the user is having data on an encrypted volume and is trying to share it with others, he has to copy the data from the encrypted volume to a new unencrypted volume. Only then can the user share it as an encrypted volume data. Otherwise the snapshot cannot be shared.

Selected Answer: C
When you create a snapshot of an encrypted EBS volume, the snapshot itself is also encrypted using the same encryption key as the source volume. This allows you to share the encrypted snapshot with other AWS accounts.

I guessed B. But I'm not entirely sure what they want. Do they want their give their friend encrypted data or unencrypted data?

C is correct. There is no way simply simply copy the EBS volume. It has be snapshoted then create a volume from snapshot.

B Copy the data from the encrypted volume to a new unencrypted volume and share it as an encrypted volume data. Otherwise the snapshot cannot be shared.

Alternatively, you can share the AMI if both are using the same CMK.

B is wrong. Sharing unencrypted data is against AWS security compliance. C is more appropriate: https://aws.amazon.com/premiumsupport/knowledge-center/share-ebs-volume/ Short Description It's not possible to directly share an encrypted Amazon EBS volume with another AWS account. Instead, create and share an encrypted Amazon EBS snapshot with the destination AWS account, copy the shared snapshot, and then create a new EBS volume from the snapshot.
